Identity Crisis

A few months ago, I had the good fortune of attending a Revenue Assurance User Group hosted by WeDo technologies. Sitting for lunch, discussions turned to whether Revenue Assurance is in deed a profession and if so, who meets the standards? Well, step back a little - who sets the standards in the first place? What code of conduct do revenue assurance practitioners subscribe to? Is the Global Revenue Assurance Professionals Association (initiated, hosted and "owned" by Rob Mattison) really a professional association?

As the debate became heated, I could not help but wonder: what profession am I in?

Today I was reminded of this when I was filling in a medical claim form and I reached the part where I am supposed to fill in profession. Against my better judgment and fully well knowing questions will arise, I gingerly filled in "revenue assurance". When I submitted my form to the clerk, she looked at me quizzically and asked if I could just explain to her what I do. I explained to her in the best way I could and when I was done, she had only one question.

So, why didn't you write that you are an auditor?

Audit- is this we do in revenue assurance? I thought we are more than that.

Enter the likes of WeDo with terms like “Business Assurance” and I am now even more lost. Beyond the switch-to-bill reconciliations, platform integrity reviews, interconnection and roaming assurance, what, in a nutshell, defines the profession that we are in?
